Did report of Dodgers’ charity overpaying executive affect auction on Manny’s Porsche?

by on July 13, 2010

Could there already be a backlash to the Dodgers’ charity efforts?

Or has Manny Ramirez’s star fallen that far?

Manny kindly donated his 1994 Porsche to auction for the Dodgers’ official charity, ThinkCure.

The red 911 Turbo coupe had only 34,000 miles on it and was appraised at more than $58,000.

Final bid: $50,100.

The New York Times reported Thursday that a high-ranking Dodgers official, Howard Sunkin, was paid more than $400,000 in 2007 from the team charity, Dodger Dream Foundation, which accounted for one fourth of the program’s nearly $1.6-million budget.

That hardly seems the groundwork to inspire confidence to the Dodgers’ charitable endeavors.

The auction for the Porsche ended Monday, almost $8,000 below its appraised value. And was owned by Manny.

Manny asked that the proceeds be divided between ThinkCure and Maryvale, a home for displaced girls in Rosemead.

Manny completed a three-game rehabilitation assignment in San Bernardino on Monday. He went a combined 0 for 9 and is scheduled to come off the disabled list Thursday, when the Dodgers open the second half of the season in St. Louis.
